MPL research oceanographer Gerald D'Spain contributed to a recent New York Times article called "Fish Sounds," that looks at the types of research being conducted across the country to study sound fish make underwater. Dr. D'Spain reports that he has recorded fish "chorusing" along the Pacific coast, from Ensenada all the way up to Point Loma. He likens their sound the "the wave" at a sports stadium, with the chorus moving up the coast like spectators leaping from their seats and hooraying in a coordinated roll. He also says he believes that the chorus is transferred from fish to fish at nearly the speed that sound travels in water -- about four and a half times as fast as sound travels in air.
