Originally formed as an organized research unit
of the University of California, San Diego in 1946 to bring university
resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems, today MPL continues
its mission of research, engineering, and education. Scientific research
and instrument development at the Marine Physical Laboratory is dedicated
to the scientific understanding and application of knowledge for the ocean,
its boundaries, and the surrounding media. MPL also reaffirms its traditional
role of contributing technical leadership in ocean science and underwater
technology to the scientific and research community.
Drawing on its own expertise
and the traditional strengths of a major university, MPL provides innovative
and imaginative solutions to complex technical problems. A large portion
of the Laboratory's research program is devoted to exploratory and advanced
development programs, with the remainder committed to basic research.
