development of oceanographic instrumentation, tools and data processing
techniques has been a major part of the work of MPL scientists, who traditionally
have also taken their equipment and skills to sea. The revolutionary development in the technology of scientific instrumentation is highlighted by a remark made, referring to pre-World War II oceanography, "We even had a slogan that the best oceanographic instruments should contain less than one vacuum tube".
