Network Connection Request

All computers and network devices, such as printers, must be registered before they are connected to the network in MPL office/lab space.

Computers MUST meet the UCSD Minimum Network Security Standards before connecting to the network. This includes installing all secuirty patches, anti-virus software, enabling firewall, etc.

To register your computer and request an IP address, send e-mail to with subject 'Network Registration Request' with the following information (copy the text below and paste into the body of your email message, then fill out the form):

Department:
Telephone:
Building/Room:
Port number on wall (for wired connection, e.g. 1.1.17 A):
Computer Make (e.g. Apple, Dell):
Computer Model:
Computer Type (portable, desktop, server):
UCSD or personally owned?:
Operating system:
Wired interface Ethernet Hardware address:
Wireless interface Ethernet Hardware address:
Preferred hostname (list 3 in order of preference):
Billing index (not for students):
PI/Supervisor/Advisor:
Email address of PI/Supervisor/Advisor:

Email address for computer support contact: 
   (responsible for UCSD minimum network security standards)

 

Ethernet Hardware Address
Many new computers show the ethernet hardware address on the outside of the box or on the back of the machine.

To get the ethernet hardware address for a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X, choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click on the Network icon, select Ethernet under the Show menu. You'll find the Ethernet address in the TCP/IP tab (OS X 10.2 Jaguar) or in the Ethernet tab (OS X 10.3 or later).

To get the ethernet hardware address for a PC running Windows NT, 2000, or XP, click on the Start menu, then choose Run. Type command then press reutrn. At the command prompt type ipconfig /all and press return. The "Physical Address" displayed is your ethernet hardware address. Type exit to quit the command prompt.

 

Configure Network Settings on your Computer

Configure your computer's network settings to use DHCP to automatically get its IP address, router, and name server information.
